self-made mummies

These were monks who aimed at immortality by turning themselves into mummies by ritually fasting and preparing their bodies for death. Occurring mostly in the mountains of Yamagata, 28 of these priestly mummies are still maintained in their temples today. The practice was declared heretical centuries ago, and was formally outlawed in 1903.
