Naka

The artwork - Lucy dyed this paper using itajime technique of press block printing on one half, freeform sumi and indigo on the other. The paper disintegrated from the sumi in the middle. Liza repaired it with a backing, and added an additional backing layer with half-round rods on either end.

The block-printed symbol is a sealscript version of the character naka, meaning middle or center. It is one of a small number of characters that can be read correctly from either end.

This scroll can be hung either direction. It has a single “wind weight”, here made from ceramic drawer pulls and polished stone disks.
